WHAT IS COMMUNICATION ACCESS REAL-TIME TRANSLATION (CART)?

CART, also known as captioning, provides word-for-word text and is considered a reasonable accommodation by the ADA .

CART works well to:

Provide text for people who are Deaf or hard-of-hearing, those for whom English is a second language, and those who absorb information visually.
Display captions to a single consumer or on a video monitor to an entire audience.

CART is frequently used by individuals, government, private sector and post-secondary education settings.

WHAT IS TYPEWELL TRANSCRIBING?

TypeWell is a service that provides real-time, meaning-for-meaning text to an individual or a general audience. The terms "transcribing" and "captioning" are sometimes used interchangeably. Often however, one thinks of the words that appear on-screen, at the bottom of a movie, or television screen, as "captioning". That is one reason that the TypeWell system is referred to as "transcribing".

Onsite transcribers can broadcast the text they’ve transcribed to all attendees. Using a remote transcriber requires a high-speed internet connection and a high-quality microphone to ensure the transcriber can hear the speaker clearly.

TypeWell works well to:

Create an opportunity for dialogue, by allowing consumers to type questions or comments for the transcriber to relay in real time
Benefit anyone who wants access to spoken words in real time, those who are hard-of-hearing or Deaf, those unable to take notes due to an injury or disability, or those challenged by lack of fluency
Provided transcripts can be printed or edited after the session is complete.
Edited or raw transcripts are provided within 24-48 hours after the assignment has been completed.
